Director's message

Director General Shin'ichi TAKEDA The National Institute of Neuroscience (NIN) is an institutional part of the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP) and is located in the city of Kodaira, middle of the old "Musashino" area in the western Tokyo.

The primitive form of it was launched in 1978 as the intra-hospital research center of the National Musashi Hospital for studies on the various aspects of neurological and psychiatrical problems. The NIN was re-organized and established in 1986 as the present form to promote not only basic neuroscience but also clinical neuroscience based on the nation-wide concept.
The NIN is now composed of 14 research sections; 7 basic sections devided by technologies such as molecular biology, biochemistry, morphology, embryology, neurobiology and so forth, and 7 clinical sections devided by target diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, depression muscular dystrophy, developmental disorders and so forth.

It is widely accepted that the 21 century is the century of the Neuroscience. We should, therefore, promote the researches of both neurologic and psychiatric fields, of both natural and social sciences, and of both adult and pediatric neurosciences. If established as such, the new Institute should be a Mecca of the "Integrative Researches of Neurology and Psychiatry" in the world.

1st December, 2017
Director General Shin'ichi TAKEDA
